The cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) plant is a perennial that is part of the ginger family. It is native to southern India. Our Cardamom essential oil is vapor distilled with no chemical process.
The plant has long leaves, flowers that can range from white to lilac to violet in color, and a three-sided yellow-green pod containing several black and brown seeds.
Did you know that the word “cardamom” is derived from the Latin Cardamomum, which is the Latinisation of the Greek Kardamomon, which was probably the name for a kind of Indian spice plant? Cardamom is known and used way before the Roman Empire!
Another fun fact about this plant, even though Cardamom originated in India, by the early 21st century, Guatemala became the largest producer of cardamom in the world, with an average annual yield between 25,000 and 29,000 tonnes!
