Interestingly, about 200 years ago, they were known by a different name: “messenger bags.” It wasn’t until around 1860 that the term “crossbody bag” gained popularity, distancing itself from the notion of a mailman’s bag.
I understand that messenger bags are typically thought of as quite large, but that’s not always the case. For instance, during the reign of Louis XIV, messengers were sent out carrying very small bags for his correspondence.
